Are employment offer letters standardized?
I recently received an employment offer from a company and I'm wondering if the language in the offer letter is standard or if I should be wary of any particular clauses. I'm eager to accept the offer, but I want to make sure that I'm not agreeing to anything that could later be detrimental to me.
Gill D.
Offer letters generally have similar language in that they offer you a specific job at a specific price point. However, these letters are not always standardized and you should read the letter carefully to understand what is being offered.

Do salary employees pay for time off if office is closed?
My daughter is currently working for a Chiropractic Office in Jacksonville. She is still within her 90 days, she was hired as a salaried employee, if she works extra the pay is the same. However, due to an upcoming holiday, she was discussing her time off with another employee and how they would have several days off to equate to a long weekend. She was told that while they are closed that Friday if she wants to get paid she will have to use her accrued PTO or her pay will be deducted and she was told not to discuss pay, hours, or any such thing with her fellow employees to go straight to HR. From HR she was then told that they do not offer sick days so they must use their PTO for sick days and that it cannot be used for days off which does not make any sense to what was said before. So for days they are not open she is going to be getting money deducted even though it is beyond her control. She is 23, working her first real job and maybe I am wrong but something does not seem right. Is there anything wrong or am I just being a worried mother.
Forest H.
There is a lot going on here. A couple of high points: 1) It is against federal labor law to prohibit employees from discussing their salary. 2) Salaried employees can be required to use PTO but their pay cannot be reduced to cover holidays if they don't have any PTO available. 3) 90 days is irrelevant, many employers will have a "probationary" period but that does not affect what laws apply to the employee.

Does the employment offer mention promotions?
I was recently offered a job and I am interested in understanding what the terms of the agreement are regarding promotions. I have been in the same job for several years and I am looking for something with more potential for advancement. Although the job offer does not explicitly mention promotions, I am hoping to get more information about the company's policy regarding career growth.
Gill D.
Employment offers can contain information about promotions, but they typically do not. Jobs and employers and situations change over time and employers don't want to get stuck agreeing to a promotion before working with you.

Dental associate contract working hours?
I am a dental associate who is considering signing a contract with a dental practice. I am interested in understanding the working hours that are outlined in the contract, so that I can make an informed decision about the position. I want to make sure that the working hours are reasonable and that I am fully aware of my obligations before signing the contract.
Diane D.
Without seeing the contract and without knowing exactly what you are looking for, it is impossible to answer your question.

Breach of contract?
I’m a nurse practitioner currently employees under a contract in which I was suppose to receive a bonus paid out 30 days after a 12 month period. One week after the 30 days has passed, the Bonus has not been paid. This is consider breach of contract, correct? the contract stipulates I must give 30 days notice prior to quitting. Does this still apply if he is in breach?
Diane D.
Have you asked about receiving the promised bonus? It may just be late. I would talk to the employer before quitting. And, yes, you must still give the 30 days' notice or you will be in breach. Also, realize, if you quit you may not be entitled to the bonus. I would have to see the contract you signed to actually know what you are entitled to or not.
Quick, user friendly and one of the better ways I've come across to get ahold of lawyers willing to take new clients.
