How to end an employment contract?

Connecticut is an "at will" state which means employers in the private sector can end the employment for no reason at all or without notice. This should be the same for an employee, however, most people give an industry standard of about 2 weeks when leaving. It will depend on the employment agreement that you signed. I am a physician who is considering a new job opportunity. I have been presented with an employment agreement, but I am unsure if I am legally obligated to sign it. I am looking for guidance on the legality of physician employment agreements and whether or not I am required to sign one.

Physician employment agreements are not required by Law but that does not mean they are not required by the Employer. Employers have these agreements in place to set the terms of the employment regarding salary, length of employment and any other relevant terms that they want the employee to agree to. But, that also means you as the employee could negotiate provisions into the agreement that you want if the employer is willing to put them in. You legally don't have to sign one, but your future employer can still require a signed agreement. Before you sign anything you should make sure you understand the terms and provisions of the agreement.

What is fixed term employment contract?
I have been given a contract that says 'Fixed Term Employment Contract'. How is this different than a normal employment contract? Is there anything I need to consider before signing this?

Generally a fix term employment contract differs from a genera employment contract in that it has an end date. For example, at-will contracts continue until you are fired or quit, while a fixed term contract only continues until the term expires. The main points to look at would be what they are classifying you as (employee vs contractor), the length of the term (so you know when the contract is up), and how to renew the contract or if there is an automatic renewal. It would also be good to double check the contract for termination clauses, as quitting may be more complicated under a fixed term contract. Ultimately, as with all contract matters it’s probably best to reach out to an attorney to review the document to get more specific answers to your concerns.
