A DV visa, or diversity visa, is issued by the U.S. Department of State to select applicants through the annual Diversity Immigrant Visa Program lottery. Steps to Apply for a DV Visa
Applying for a visa includes various steps:
- Register for an Entry. One can apply for a DV visa during the Diversity immigrant visa program. This is held each fiscal year by the US authorities. Every detail of this diversity immigrant visa program is published in detail by the Department of State, which provides the dates of registration and the other intricacies that must be noticed while registering for the same. - Go Through the Selection Process. Every fiscal year, the Department of the State conducts the diversity immigrant visa program and selects random applicants from various regions and countries. This stage will require your unique confirmation number to check your results. It must be noted that the Department of State will not send any official mail or letters to notify the selected candidates. Every candidate must go through the list and enter the unique confirmation number to determine if they get selected.
- Confirm Qualification. If you get selected, you need to confirm the following qualifications. A high school education or equivalent or two years of qualifying work experience for the diversity program visa is pertinent. You must have a valid passport and sort other relevant documents required to prove the eligibility criteria.
- Submit the Immigration Visa. Once the qualifying criteria are met, and one decides to opt for further process, they must submit Form DS-260 for the further process. The applicant must complete Form DS-160, the nonimmigrant visa application, for further processing. The form and accompanying evidence are sent to the concerned authorities which handle the application. The NVC may request additional information from the applicant to ensure the relationship's legitimacy. After processing, the application is forwarded to the embassy.

Undertake the Medical Examination.
The next stage is the medical examination conducted by the United States government-authorized physician. The applicants undergo tests for various illnesses and diseases and a comprehensive mental and physical evaluation during this examination. The doctor reviews their medical history and vaccine records and screens for drug and alcohol abuse. To prepare for the medical examination, the applicant should take:
- The green card interview letter from the NVC
- Vaccination records
- Documents of their medical history
- A photo ID proof
- Adhere to the Biometric Data Examination. Following the medical examination, the applicant must schedule a biometrics appointment. This appointment involves capturing photos and collecting fingerprints. For applicants for a DV visa, the appointment typically occurs at the USCIS. This appointment involves verifying the applicant's identity eligibility and conducting background checks.

Attend the DV Interview.
The final step before obtaining a DV visa is the interview. A USCIS officer conducts this interview, and the applicant must confirm the accuracy and validity of the information provided in their application. They must accurately give answers related to their official stay for work and other important or relevant information that may be required to complete the process. Also, the required documents for the interview include a valid birth certificate, among others.
The following documents must be kept handy during the interview:
- Appointment information from the Electronic Diversity Visa (E-DV) website.
- DS-260 confirmation
- The passport of each applicant,
- Two identical color photographs for each applicant.
- Medical Exam Results
- Original documents or certified copies of all documents submitted to KCCeach applicant applying for a visa
- If documents require English translation, one must obtain certified translations and present them on the day of your interview.
- Visa Fees
- Provide Supporting Documents. It is probably the final stage of the DV visa. Usually, supporting documents must be submitted after the DS 260 application is received and processed. However, it must be noted that applicants are not required to submit the supporting documents to the KCC until they receive instructions from the concerned authorities.

- Derivative Beneficiary: This term refers to the principal applicant's family members in the Diversity Visa program. It includes spouses and unmarried children under 21 eligible for immigrant visas based on the principal applicant's DV status.
- Principal Applicant: They are eligible to apply for U.S. permanent residence. The primary candidate may also submit an application for their spouse and any unmarried children under 21.
- Immigrant Visa: entitles its bearer to permanent residency in the United States. DV recipients are granted immigration visas.
- Adjustment of Status: an eligible immigrant in the United States can apply for permanent residency without returning to their place of origin to complete their visa.
- Consular Processing: is the process of applying for an immigrant visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate outside the country.
