What is an Interstate Agreement On Detainers?
The interstate agreement on detainers is an agreement that governs the transfer of a prisoner between two states or from a federal to a state facility. The contract contains details about the location of each facility, when the transfer will take place, and what rules and regulations must be followed during the transfer. This type of transfer agreement is used when the transfer of the prisoner is to deliver them to a jurisdiction to be tried for a crime committed there. The purpose of the agreement is to encourage expeditious delivery of a prisoner from one place to another to be tried for a crime.
