Are there legitimate crypto scam investigators?
I believe I have been scammed and wanted to get in touch with a lawyer asap.
Do you help investigate these instances?
Hello!
My name is Dolan and thank you so much for contacting me!
I just had a few quick questions for you:
There are legitimate investigators for this. Can I presume you're in the USA?
Yes, I am in California. The scammer isn't - I think they are abroad (Hong Kong I think).
I'm so sorry about that! Did you request your shares back or did you try to exercise your shares I presume?
I've been asking for my money back and they haven't given it back yet.
I gave this 'firm' money to invest on my behalf because of their returns and now I think it is a total scam.
I'm $50k in.
Understood! So you're just wondering what it is you can do here, correct?
I am wondering if there are steps I can take to investigate whether they are legit or a scam and if you can help me with that.
No problem! I’ll certainly address that. Anything else you'd like to add you think is relevant before I answer?
No, we can start there.
Ok! I've been working on an answer while we've been chatting, so it'll just be a moment.
So this appears like a scam.
Here is what you need to do:
- File a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office: https://oag.ca.gov/contact/consumer-complaint-against-business-or-company
- Contact the International Police (INTERPOL): https://www.interpol.int/en/Contacts/Contact-INTERPOL
- File a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/about-us/blog/so-how-do-i-submit-a-complaint/
- File a complaint with the FTC: https://consumer.ftc.gov/media/video-0054-how-file-complaint-federal-trade-commission
- File a complaint with the SEC: https://www.sec.gov/tcr
These agencies investigate these issues and even work in concert together. There is a high chance that each agency has already received complaints.
OK, got it. So I don't need to find a private investigator?
Not in this case. You want a public investigator (e.g. those agencies).
I guess I would need help with getting my money back as well. Thanks for providing where to report crypto scams - that's helpful.
What type of legal actions can I take to get my money back?
Can I file a crypto scam lawsuit?
You definitely can file one. The issue you may run into is that filing fraud lawsuits can be draining emotionally, in terms of your time, and financially.
So my recommendation is to let the government do this work for you, at least for now.
OK got it. Could these government agencies help get my money back from this bitcoin scammer?
Or do I need a lawyer for that?
Yes, their whole purpose is to help with things like that.
There is never a guarantee of being able to get your money back, with or without a lawyer, but you can always seek out a fraud and consumer protection attorney locally.
I don’t have any contacts but try clicking here:

- Local law schools might offer free legal assistance.

- Sometimes, Yelp.com is a surprisingly good place to find lawyers.
You can also return to this site and ask questions to me as you go through this process to keep your costs down.
Does that help make sense of things a bit more? I want to make sure I didn’t leave anything out.
OK thank you. Would I need a lawyer in Hong Kong? This is where this firm is located.
Either here, or in HK, would be helpful. Unfortunately, I don't have access to HK lawyer sites :(
OK got it - this has been helpful. I'll look for a lawyer in Hong Kong to consult with and also will be reporting these guys asap to these agencies to see if they can help. Thank you!
