What is ERISA?
The Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, better known as ERISA, was put in place to protect those covered by employee benefit plans. In general, it protects retirement savings of workers by ensuring that plan assets are not misused. It also establishes laws regarding welfare benefit plans and disability insurance.
ERISA laws do not apply to all companies, but it is important for startup owners to consider these protections.

- Example 2. Unemployment benefits
- Example 3. Vacation benefits
