What is Fannie Mae?
The Federal National Mortgage Association, also known as Fannie Mae, is a government corporation that offers funding for mortgages. It does this by purchasing them from banks and other non-banking lenders.
The organization plays an essential role in maintaining the thirty-year fixed-rate mortgage, one of the most popular home loan options in the market. While Fannie Mae doesn’t originate or offer mortgages to borrowers, the organization purchases and guarantees them through the secondary mortgage market.
Examples of what Fannie Mae does
- Example 1: It provides liquidity to the country’s mortgage financing system.
- Example 2: Fannie Mae pools mortgages to create mortgage-backed securities.
