What is Collateral?
Collateral boils down to one or more assets that a lender deems acceptable as loan security. Although it depends on the loan agreement or mortgage note , the most common type of collateral is real estate. In essence, the collateral offers protection to the lender in case the borrower fails to pay back the borrowed amount. If the borrower fails to pay the amount, the lender gets the legal right to take control of the collateral. The lender can possess or sell the collateral in order to recover the portion or entire amount.
