Settlement Agreement

Illinois

Asked on Dec 17, 2023

Can settlement agreements include non-monetary terms?

I recently entered into a settlement agreement with another party, and I am trying to determine whether non-monetary terms can be included in the agreement. I am concerned about potential liabilities and obligations that may arise from the agreement if non-monetary terms are included. I would like to know what legal considerations I should take into account when crafting the agreement.

Andre T.

Answered Jan 30, 2024

Settlement agreements can contain any provisions that the parties are willing to agree to provided that those provisions are not illegal or against public policy. There are also safe guards that can be included in the language of the agreement so that legally enforceable terms are undisturbed even if part of the agreement may be found to be invalid.

Employment Offer

Florida

Asked on Dec 8, 2023

Does the employment offer mention promotions?

I was recently offered a job and I am interested in understanding what the terms of the agreement are regarding promotions. I have been in the same job for several years and I am looking for something with more potential for advancement. Although the job offer does not explicitly mention promotions, I am hoping to get more information about the company's policy regarding career growth.

Gill D.

Answered Jan 2, 2024

Employment offers can contain information about promotions, but they typically do not. Jobs and employers and situations change over time and employers don't want to get stuck agreeing to a promotion before working with you.

Employment Offer

Washington

Asked on Dec 8, 2023

How to compare multiple employment offers?

I recently received multiple job offers and I'm having difficulty deciding between them. I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons of each offer, and would like to know what considerations should be taken into account when comparing multiple employment offers. I'm concerned about the salary, benefits, vacation time, and job responsibilities, but I'm not sure what other factors I should consider.

Merry K.

Answered Dec 12, 2023

Congratulations on receiving multiple job offers. In addition to what you listed as considerations, above, you can review things such as whether these are all for employment (rather than independent contractor); whether you would be considered "at will" or would be given a number of rights as an employee; and whether the employer would provide training/mentorship etc. If I were in your shoes, I'd compare reviews of each employer, as an employer - this can be hard to find, but Glassdoor.com has a limited number of reviews of certain employers. If at all possible, reach out to some current employees at each company and ask the same or similar questions, such as "what do you like or dislike most" about your job and the employer?

California

Asked on May 22, 2025

Can I file an EEOC complaint for workplace discrimination based on my disability?

I have been working at my current job for several years and recently I have been facing discrimination from my supervisor due to my disability. Despite providing all necessary documentation and accommodations, my supervisor has been consistently undermining my work, excluding me from important meetings, and making derogatory comments about my disability. I am now considering filing an EEOC complaint, but I am uncertain about the process and if I have a strong case.

Christopher N.

Answered Jul 1, 2025

Short answer: Yes. There are some siginficant deadlines (180 days and up to 300 days) you will need to meet, forms to fill out, and a venue to choose (California law vs. Federal law). Without more specific it is difficult to give you specifics, Thus, given the deadlines and the specifics of your case, I HIGHLY recommend you speak with an employment lawyer very quickly to fully understand where you in the timline, what you will need to prove, and where to file -- and more importantly, if you have a case. Good luck.

Employment Agreement

Connecticut

Asked on Mar 22, 2023

How to end an employment contract?

I am currently an employee with an employment contract, but I am considering terminating my employment due to various reasons such as a breach of contract, a hostile work environment, or a desire to pursue other opportunities. However, I am unsure of the legal requirements and consequences of ending the contract before its specified end date. Therefore, I would like to seek the advice of a lawyer to better understand the steps involved in terminating an employment contract and to ensure that I am protected legally.

Donya G.

Answered Mar 24, 2023

Connecticut is an "at will" state which means employers in the private sector can end the employment for no reason at all or without notice. This should be the same for an employee, however, most people give an industry standard of about 2 weeks when leaving. It will depend on the employment agreement that you signed. The agreement will have to be reviewed and you would need to be advised based on your agreement. I can assist you with that. You can find me on the website and engage my services. Donya Gordon
