How to end an employment contract?

I am currently an employee with an employment contract, but I am considering terminating my employment due to various reasons such as a breach of contract, a hostile work environment, or a desire to pursue other opportunities. However, I am unsure of the legal requirements and consequences of ending the contract before its specified end date. Therefore, I would like to seek the advice of a lawyer to better understand the steps involved in terminating an employment contract and to ensure that I am protected legally.

Connecticut is an "at will" state which means employers in the private sector can end the employment for no reason at all or without notice. This should be the same for an employee, however, most people give an industry standard of about 2 weeks when leaving. It will depend on the employment agreement that you signed. Response to an unfair demand letter?

I recently received a demand letter from a former employer, accusing me of violating our employment agreement. The allegations are false and I believe the demands made in the letter are unfair. I am seeking legal advice to understand my rights and how I can respond to the demand letter.

Hello - so sorry that you received this. First off, be aware that there is zero requirement that you reply to a demand letter; sometimes, strategically, it's better not to, because anything you say could be used against you should the employer escalate the matter. Second, in many demand letters, a lawsuit is threatened, but many people make threats and never follow through with a lawsuit. Third, if the letter is from the employer, rather than from an attorney, it's less likely to be factually and legall accurate than if it came from an attorney. Finally, if you are concerned, it'd be a good idea to have the letter AND your contract AND any other pertinent information reviewed by an employment attorney. Are employment contracts confidential?

I'm considering taking a second job but would not want my first employer to know. Is there any way for them to find out? I am not sure what all of the language in the contract says and may need to get it reviewed, but I wanted to see if these contracts are kept confidential so that my employer never finds out.

If an employee is paid salary, can an employee force PTO if said employee is out with a doctor’s excuse?

I got sick and ended up missing a day of work. I went to the doctor and was prescribed meds and told to take meds and rest the next 2 days. I provided an excuse at work. When I got my pay stub, I see the manager forced 24 hours of PTO for the days I was out. Mind you, our hours of operation are 8am-5pm M-F, but I’m here every day at 6:30am and work until 8, 9 or 10:00pm some days. Please advise. Thank you for your time!

The rules for the salary basis of pay is governed by a federal law called the Fair Labor Standards Act. It allow an employer to deduct an entire day's pay if an entire day of work is missed. If any part of such a day was worked at all, then a full day's pay is required by law. HOWEVER, there is an exception under which partial day deductions for partial day absences is allowed if an only if the absence is for Family and Medical Leave Act leave. I'm not licensed to practice law in Texas: if there is any peculiar spin on it through state law, perhaps a Texas attorney will chime in. It is ordinary for an employer to substitute PTO for salary pay when a whole day is missed.
