What is a Taxable Event?
Any time an action is taken or a transaction is made that triggers tax being owed to the government, it is called a taxable event. The Internal Revenue Service defines what is classified as a taxable event and the rules can vary depending on whether the taxed entity is an individual or a business. It is illegal to deliberately avoid a taxable event, but stockholders can use certain strategies to minimize them.

Examples of a taxable event:
- Example 1. Receiving a paycheck
- Example 2. Paying oneself out of a company’s profits
- Example 3. Receiving dividend payments
- Example 4. Making money off of profits from a sale
