Overview of Florida Sales Tax

Florida sales tax is levied on goods and services sold within the state. It’s assessed and charged at the point of sale. Businesses in Florida then pay the sales taxes to the Department of Revenue.

Florida tax lawyers provide business-friendly advice regarding sales tax. Avoid making legal mistakes to prevent tax problems from occurring.

Here’s a web page offering a Florida tax guide.

Sales Tax Rate

Florida’s sales tax rate, or business tax rates on sales, is 6 percent. However, there are exceptions, including 4 percent on amusement machines, 5.5 percent on commercial real estate leases, and 6.95 percent on electricity.

The sales tax rate in Florida is 14.86 percent higher than the national average. Here’s a web page that lists Florida sales tax rates by city.

Federal Sales Tax vs. Florida Sales Tax

A federal tax on sales doesn’t apply to purchases. The IRS doesn’t require sales tax payments. However, state taxes on sales in Florida apply at a rate of 6 percent.

Compliance with Florida Sales Tax

Florida sales tax compliance falls on the merchants’ shoulders since they’re collecting the taxes from customers on the condition of a sale.

You must pay Florida sales tax if you sell:

  • Real estate
  • Retail items
  • Leases
  • Imports
  • Services

Other federal and state taxes apply to revenues earned. Retain your records for at least six years.

Here’s another web page about Florida sales and use tax compliance.

Sales Tax Calculator

A Florida sales tax calculator helps you calculate the sales tax amount for a given product or service. Here’s how you calculate Florida sales tax in general:

  • Step 1: Find the item price
  • Step 2: Multiply it by 0.06 percent
  • Step 3: The result is your sales tax

Ensure you account for the proper exemptions, deductions, and tax cuts available if any. They can significantly offset the amount of money you pay.

Filing & Paying

Filing and paying Florida sales taxes for customers occur at the point of sale. However, a business must pay sales and employer-related taxes to Florida’s Department of Revenue by using the Sales and Use Tax Return.

Other Florida Taxes

Other taxes in Florida apply to operating a business, including a sole proprietorship, LLC, or passthrough entity. Ensure you maximize your income by taking advantage of tax deductions and more. Speak with Florida tax lawyers to learn more about your options.
